The ones that got away

So if you read that recent post on Kafka on the shore, you will know just how bad my finances have been. I discovered two new books out today by two authors I really like, and ofcourse was in no shape to buy either, each totting up at over 500 bucks.

The first one is The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana by Umberto Eco, that master writer of the Name of the Rose. Here is an interesting review in the Post-Gazette that explains how the novel subverts the theme of a man creating literature from his memories into one of a man trying to recreate his lost memory and therefore his self from the literature that he has read.

The second one is John Irving's new release, Until I find you. John Irving was once upon a time my absolute favourite. Now however I am a little more ambivalent about his writing. The World According to Garp remains one of my best novels, but he does tend to get a little repetitive in other books. This one has received fairly ambivalent reviews, with some critics slamming it for the excessive melancholy and length.

What did I pick up finally? A copy of Kafka's Metamorphosis, an author I have never read before despite the intellectual pretensions it bestows on the reader when seen with a copy. Besides, he was cheap at Rs. 125.

always though one read kafka in college and irving in the transition between school and college... i guess there is a phase in everyones life... ok let me modify that to every reader's life when he/she has been hooked to a book or author... my phase with irving was quite short because because i think i read garp first and then the other books and after one has read that there is nothing much more u can look forward to... i think my longest phase was ayn rand... also because i read my favourtie ayn rand book quite late... in class xi in school and then over the ext few years i re-read many of the her other works... coming to the other point that u can have a particular book phase as well... and i think between the two of them my longest phase with a book has to be alchemist/by the river... and of course one does not count the genre phases... like i am into sci fi right now... so i am reading a lot of sci fi author by author and have just started on card... but it is not a card phase but a sci fi phase...
and hey, i gave up buying new books many years ago - i think when my collection crossed a couple of thousand... will write a piece on how my collection has grown from about 2000 books to over 5000 without having bought more than a few brand new books...

Typically I dont go through these authors; Most of my favourite authors, I discover that they stay with me as I get older. Ayn Rand is I think one of those people are always worshipping in the school years...When they read it a few years later...wholly different story!

usually one derives differing kinds of pleasure from reading the same book after a few years... but its just a reflection of ur growth that u move on from some authors... and if u read them a few years later, then u wonder what u found in them that made u read them... one genre on the whole has withstood that test of time... all the books of theat genre that i liked then i still like now... wanna take a guess on wwhich one that is...
